Treat yourself to a Weekend Away, Immersed in Art…

Creativity and the artistic process provide an opportunity to explore the world around us, engage in meaningful contemplation, process our emotions and share our unique voice. However, with the ever-changing landscape of our current world and lives, many of us have been required to put our creative sides on hold, or have been too blocked to create anything at all. In this weekend-long art journaling retreat, we will gently nurture our artistic sprits and rekindle our creative thought process. By incorporating a short writing exercise and an optional gentle yoga practice into our daily schedule, we will create a quiet and calming environment so our thoughts can be mindful and open to artistic inspiration.

All Experience Levels from all Artistic Disciplines are Welcome and Celebrated...

Have you pushed the pause button on your creative spirit? Do you sometimes feel like you don’t know where to start? Is the blank page overwhelming or intimidating – are you afraid to make a “mistake.” This weekend retreat is for any artist who desires to awaken their freedom to create. There are no rules. There are no mistakes. In this workshop you will be given permission to play—through the process of play you will learn how to silence your internal critic who demands your perfection. Through practice of play—your art will grow.

During the retreat you will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques for adding words to your art journal pages, we’ll play with textures and use them to express emotions in our books, we’ll learn ways to capture memories and reflections when we’re on the go so we can add them to our journals later and much more. Most importantly, we will learn to embrace our journals as a safe place to explore our ideas, express our feelings and experiment with artistic techniques.

Tentative Schedule

Thursday : May 19

Arrival & Evening Programming

Pizza farm! Big Raven Farm will provide a welcoming farm-to-table buffet, and afterwards we’ll move to the studio for a journaling activity to open our minds and get us ready for a weekend of creative play. We’ll use this activity to help us choose a guiding word for the weekend that we’ll paint onto a rock and keep with us for the duration of the retreat.

Friday : May 20

Morning

We’ll start the day with a short journaling session then work together creating artist trading cards. Using blind contour drawings and fun prompts, we’ll create a card for each person in the group and each person will leave with a deck to remember fellow participants. Optional yoga class at 9 AM.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, we’ll learn several different ways to add words and handwriting into our journals including creative ways to highlight text, unique ways to hide your writing so you can get your thoughts down with no fear of anyone else reading them and then we’ll explore some ways to add other people’s words to our books through quotes, cut-outs and blackout poetry. Optional: After you have completed your afternoon lesson, you will have the option to take a walk around the idyllic farm, work independently in the open studio, check out the town of Spring Grove or take a nap in your room.

Evening

There will be an optional evening journaling session followed by your choice of working in the Open Studio or having your evening free to spend as you’d like.

Saturday : May 21

Morning

We’ll begin the day with a short journaling exercise and then we’ll dive into the morning’s lesson of how to add visual thoughts and memories to our art journals. Activities will include making creative mind maps, collage, building pockets and envelopes into our books, adding pages and creating our own zines.  There is an optional yoga class at 9 AM.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, we’ll explore texture in our journal pages and how to use different techniques to express our emotions. We’ll explore modeling paste, layering techniques and how to add textiles to our books. Optional: After you have completed your afternoon lesson, you will have the option to take a walk around the idyllic farm, work independently in the open studio, check out the town of Spring Grove or take a nap in your room.

Evening

There will be an optional evening journaling session followed by your choice of working in the Open Studio or having your evening free to use as you’d like. There will also be an optional candlelight yoga session before bed.

Sunday : May 22

Morning & Early Afternoon

As a parting farewell, we will all participate in a round-robin activity where we will pass our journals in a circle and create a small piece of artwork in each person’s book. This will allow us to share some of our favorite memories from the weekend and also to go home with a piece of artwork from each person in the class.

  • What kind of meals do you serve?
All of the meals and snacks are made in our Commercial Kitchen at Big Raven Farm. Both Darin and Joleen hold culinary certifications: Darin has trained with Danielle Kattan in Asian Cuisine and Joleen has earned a Baking Certificate from the Culinary Institute of America—Hyde Park, New York. To give you more detail of what you can expect here is a recent menu from a weekend retreat: We don't serve soda but we do make sure that water, coffee, iced tea and Arnold Palmers are available all day long. • Can I use your kitchen to prepare my own meals?
You can store items in our fridge but no, you cannot wield knives or fire up the stove. We have a guest pantry with microwave just off the kitchen that is stocked with snacks and a full cookie jar—please help yourself. Joleen's most requested and loved Gingersnaps are usually found lurking in there.
  • What if I need special meals?
There will be a follow up email sent to you that contains driving directions and details about retreat logistics. If you need Vegan, Vegetarian, or Gluten Free options reply to that email and let us know. If you have menu requirements different from what is posted here—just talk to Joleen—she's nice and loves to help.
  • Can we talk about your coffee?
This is a great question—in fact, a really important question—in our Commercial grade coffee maker we brew and serve locally sourced and roasted coffee, this tasty option IS included with your registration. We also serve espresso and lattes—these options are NOT included with your registration. Our fancy coffee bar beverages have an additional fee—but you can run a tab and we will settle up at the end of your weekend.
  • Can you tell me more about Big Raven Farm?
Big Raven Farm is a functioning Bed & Breakfast with a Retreat Center, Yoga Studio, Print Shop, Gift Shop, Nature Trail, Summer House and outbuildings. It is owned and operated by Joleen Emery & Darin Warling, together with and 2 of their 4 kids (Georgie & Charlie) they live on the property and manage their businesses.
  • Does the Farm have common spaces—places to hang out besides guest bedrooms?
Absolutely!! We have a beautiful Great Room with couches and chairs, a dining veranda with tables & chairs, patios off the front of the house, and a huge wrap around porch with incredible views connected to the yoga studio. There are lots and lots of places to settle in and enjoy the serenity of the farm.
  • Do you serve alcohol?
Nope—we are a coffee, tea, lemonade, iced tea, Arnold Palmer kinda joint.
  • Can I bring my pet?
Our home belongs to the pets we already have... chickens, cats, kittens, and our beloved family dog, Auggie.
  • Wait, is this your family home?
Yes! We have our own personal bedrooms and living spaces, you can't shake us—we are ALWAYS here!.
  • Are there TVs in the rooms?
No, but we have excellent wi-fi if you want to stream to your electronic devices.
  • What’s your refund policy?
I’m sorry, but I’m afraid we cannot refund reservations. If you’ve reserved a spot, it has prevented someone else from registering. However, you are more than welcome to find someone else to take over your spot prior to the retreat!
  • What is your COVID-19 Policy & Protocol?
Everyone who lives and works at Big Raven Farm is vaccinated. Given that retreats occur largely indoors, bedrooms are double occupancy, and that we enjoy family-style dining, we require our guests to be vaccinated for the safety of all participants and staff. To do our part we follow the Minnesota State COVID-19 cleanliness guidelines for Inns and Hotels.
