Join Our Cooking Retreat at Big Raven Farm: A Foodie Weekend in the Midwest

Join us at Big Raven Farm for a four-day cooking retreat in the Midwest where guests learn practical culinary techniques, share unforgettable meals, and experience the joy of cooking together.

There is something special about gathering around food.

Not just eating it, but preparing it together. Chopping vegetables at a wooden table. Stirring a simmering pot while someone pours tea. Passing a plate across the table and hearing the quiet satisfaction of people enjoying something made by hand.

That spirit is at the heart of our Cooking Retreat at Big Raven Farm, and we are excited to welcome guests to the first retreat of the year. Over four days and three nights, March 26 to 29, 2026,  guests gather for hands-on culinary learning, shared meals, and the simple joy of slowing down in the kitchen.

If you have followed our journal for a while, you may remember a few of our past reflections on cooking retreats, including A Culinary Retreat Like No Other, Why Food Matters at a Retreat, and Why Cooking Retreats Are the Ultimate Getaway for Food Lovers. In those articles we explored the deeper experience of cooking together and why food can be such a meaningful part of a retreat.

This year’s retreat builds on those ideas while offering something new: practical ways to elevate your everyday cooking at home.

More Than a Cooking Class

One of the biggest surprises guests often share after attending a retreat is that it does not feel like a traditional cooking class.

A class often has a clear instructor and a clear audience. There is a demonstration, followed by practice, and then the experience ends.

A retreat is different.

At our cooking retreats, learning happens naturally and collaboratively. You might learn a knife technique while preparing vegetables alongside someone new. You might discover a seasoning combination during a shared tasting. You might pick up a baking tip during a relaxed morning conversation in the kitchen.

The experience becomes immersive rather than instructional.

Guests leave with practical knowledge, but they also leave with a deeper sense of confidence in the kitchen and a renewed appreciation for preparing meals thoughtfully. As we shared in Why Food Matters at a Retreat, cooking and sharing meals together often creates connection faster than almost any other activity.

Join Us at Big Raven Farm

Join us at Big Raven Farm for another incredible cooking and foodie retreat.

This four-day, three-night experience offers hands-on instruction in the culinary arts led by Darin Warling, executive chef at Big Raven Farm. This year’s theme focuses on easy ways to elevate your cooking at home.

Throughout the retreat, guests will learn approachable techniques that can transform everyday meals.

You will learn how to make yogurt and mayonnaise that are fresher, taste better, and are often less expensive than what you can buy at the store. We will explore how to make an incredibly tender brisket using sous vide, with no grill required. Guests will also learn how easy it is to make homemade coffee creamer, fresh salad dressings, and even butter using nothing more than a standard KitchenAid stand mixer.

These projects are simple, practical, and surprisingly fun to learn.

Of course, a retreat is not only about cooking. There will also be time to relax, enjoy the surroundings, and connect with fellow guests. Optional outings to a local brewery and distillery offer another way to experience the area and unwind between kitchen sessions.

Whether you attend with a partner, a friend, or on your own, the retreat quickly becomes a welcoming and collaborative experience.

Slowing Down the Way We Cook

Modern life often pushes cooking into the category of something to get done quickly.

Meals become rushed, recipes become shortcuts, and convenience replaces creativity.

At a retreat, we intentionally shift that pace.

Cooking becomes slower and more thoughtful. Guests have time to understand why ingredients work together, how flavors build, and how small techniques can transform a simple dish.

Instead of rushing through recipes, we explore them.

Many guests rediscover something they had forgotten: cooking can be deeply enjoyable when there is time to savor the process.

Learning the Stories Behind the Food

Another aspect of our retreats is the way food naturally leads to storytelling.

Every recipe has a history. Every ingredient has a story. During the retreat we often find ourselves discussing where dishes come from, how they have evolved, and the memories people associate with them.

Guests frequently share family recipes or cooking traditions from their own lives.

These conversations turn the kitchen into something more than a classroom. It becomes a place where culture, memory, and creativity come together around the table.

Seasonal Cooking Inspiration

Cooking at the farm also encourages us to think about seasonal ingredients.

When food is fresh and in season, flavor naturally becomes the star of the dish. A few simple ingredients prepared well can become a memorable meal.

During the retreat we explore how herbs, vegetables, sauces, and simple preparations can elevate everyday cooking.

Many guests leave with ideas for weeknight meals, gatherings with friends, or new dishes they feel excited to recreate at home.

The Joy of Cooking Together

One thing that makes our retreats unique is the collaborative nature of the kitchen.

Cooking together naturally creates connection.

People often arrive as strangers, but within a few hours they are chopping vegetables side by side, sharing tips, laughing over mistakes, and celebrating small culinary victories.

Someone stirs the sauce while another plates the dish. Someone pours drinks while another sets the table.

By the time everyone sits down to eat, the meal feels meaningful because everyone helped create it.

This spirit of shared effort is one of the reasons guests often return for future retreats.

Space for Creativity

While we offer guidance and instruction, we also encourage creativity.

Cooking is both a skill and an art.

Guests are invited to experiment with flavors, plating, and presentation. Sometimes the most exciting discoveries come from trying something unexpected or adjusting a recipe to suit personal taste.

Many guests find that the retreat helps them approach cooking differently when they return home. Instead of following recipes exactly, they begin to trust their instincts in the kitchen.

A Weekend That Feels Restorative

Although cooking is the heart of the retreat, the overall experience is designed to feel restorative.

There is time to cook, time to eat, and time simply to enjoy the surroundings.

Many guests arrive feeling busy or distracted. By the end of the weekend they often describe feeling grounded, inspired, and creatively refreshed.

Food has a way of doing that.

Preparing meals thoughtfully and sharing them with others reminds us that nourishment is not only physical. It is also emotional and communal.

A Cooking Retreat in the Midwest

Big Raven Farm provides a peaceful setting that makes it easy to slow down and fully enjoy the experience of cooking together.

Located in the Midwest, the farm offers a beautiful backdrop for a weekend focused on food, creativity, and connection.

Guests spend their days learning in the kitchen, sharing meals around the table, and enjoying the rhythm of the farm. Evenings are relaxed and welcoming, often filled with conversation, laughter, and the simple pleasure of a meal prepared together.

For many guests, stepping away from the pace of daily life is part of what makes the retreat so meaningful.

Cooking becomes less about rushing through recipes and more about savoring the process, the ingredients, and the people around you.
