The Quiet Difference of a Mat Made for You | Big Raven Yoga

Big Raven Yoga started because I couldn't find the yoga mat I wanted.

Years ago, after an accident left me dealing with chronic pain, yoga became an important part of my recovery. Like many people, I started searching for products that would make my practice more comfortable and more enjoyable.

What I found was a lot of compromise.

The mats that looked beautiful often didn't perform well. The mats that performed well weren't designs I wanted to look at every day. Some became slippery. Some required a towel. Others felt generic, like they could belong to anyone.

I kept wishing someone would make a mat that combined function, comfort, artwork, and personality in one product.

Eventually I stopped looking and decided to create it myself.

What started as a search for a better yoga mat became Big Raven Yoga.

Every feature of our mats comes from something I wanted in my own practice. A surface that doesn't require a separate towel. Artwork that feels meaningful instead of mass-produced. The ability to personalize a mat so it actually feels like yours. Even the option to create something completely custom.

Because after spending years on yoga mats that felt like compromises, I wanted to create one that didn't.

Over the years, I've learned something.

The best yoga mat isn't necessarily the one with the longest list of features. It's the one you actually want to use.

And that matters more than most people realize.

The Mat You Reach for Is the One That Works

People spend a lot of time researching yoga mats.

They compare thickness, materials, grip levels, and reviews. Those things matter, but I've found there's another factor that's rarely discussed.

Connection.

When you genuinely enjoy your mat, you're more likely to use it.

You leave it unrolled in the corner.

You see it when you walk past.

You think, "I have ten minutes."

And suddenly ten minutes becomes a stretch session, a yoga practice, or a few quiet moments to yourself.

A yoga practice isn't built through one perfect class.

It's built through hundreds of ordinary moments.

The easier it feels to begin, the more likely those moments happen.

Most Yoga Mats Are Made for Everyone

Which often means they're made for no one in particular.

Walk through almost any sporting goods store and you'll find rows of similar products.

Solid colors.

Basic patterns.

The same handful of options repeated over and over again.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that.

But yoga is personal.

Some people come to yoga for strength.

Some come for flexibility.

Some come for stress relief.

Some simply want a few minutes away from the constant noise of everyday life.

If the practice is personal, shouldn't the mat be personal too?

That's why every Big Raven Yoga mat begins with artwork.

Not generic patterns designed to appeal to the widest possible audience.

Artwork.

Every design starts with an idea, a story, a season, a landscape, or something meaningful.

Summer Savasana

Some are inspired by nature. Others by books, faith, flowers, wildlife, folklore, or the changing seasons.

The goal isn't simply to create something beautiful.

The goal is to create something people connect with.

The Beauty of a Personalized Yoga Mat

One of my favorite things we offer is personalization.

Sometimes someone finds a design they love and wants to make it uniquely theirs.

A name.

Raven Galaxy

A meaningful date.

A favorite quote.

A word that serves as a reminder.

A memorial tribute.

A family name.

What starts as a yoga mat becomes something more personal.

It's a small change, but it creates a surprisingly different experience.

Because when something is made specifically for you, you naturally feel more connected to it.

And when you're connected to it, you're more likely to use it.

That's one of those quiet benefits that never appears on a product specification sheet.

But it's real.

When Personalization Isn't Enough

Sometimes people want something completely original.

That's where custom yoga mats come in.

Over the years we've created mats using customer artwork, photography, paintings, logos, and meaningful personal images.

Some customers are artists who want to practice on their own work.

Some are yoga instructors looking for a branded mat.

Others are creating a gift that simply can't be purchased anywhere else.

There is something special about knowing the mat beneath your hands exists nowhere else in the world.

It's yours.

And while custom yoga mats are certainly beautiful, what I hear most often is that people feel more connected to their practice because of that personal connection.

Built From Real Practice, Not Market Research

Many yoga products are created by companies looking for the next trend.

Big Raven Yoga came from a different place.

The features that matter most weren't chosen because they looked good in a catalog.

They came directly from my own experience.

I wanted a mat that felt comfortable.

I wanted a mat that looked beautiful.

I wanted a mat that didn't require extra accessories.

I wanted a mat that felt personal.

Every feature we include today traces back to those original goals.

Not because someone told us customers wanted them.

Because I wanted them myself.

And if I was looking for those things, I suspected other people were too.

The Surface That Doesn't Need a Towel

This is one of the features customers mention most often after they've used their mat for a while.

Traditional yoga mats often become slippery once moisture enters the equation.

Sweaty hands.

Warm rooms.

Summer practice.

Hot yoga.

The common solution is to place a towel over the mat.

But towels move.

They bunch up.

They slide.

They become one more thing to wash and carry.

Big Raven Yoga mats feature a microfiber suede surface made from recycled materials that behaves differently.

When I was developing the mat, performance mattered first. But I also wanted to make thoughtful choices about the materials we used whenever possible. The result is a surface that not only feels soft and comfortable under your hands and feet, but also gives new life to materials that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

As moisture increases, grip improves.

Coneflowers

Many customers find they don't need a separate yoga towel at all.

If you're practicing in a dry environment, a light mist of water before practice can provide additional traction immediately.

It's a simple feature.

But it's one that can make practice feel significantly more comfortable.

Comfort Without Sacrificing Stability

Finding the right balance between cushioning and stability can be surprisingly difficult.

A mat that's too thin can make your knees and wrists unhappy.

A mat that's too thick can make balancing poses feel unstable.

Our mats feature a 5mm natural rubber base designed to create a comfortable middle ground.

Enough cushioning to support your body.

Enough stability to support your movement.

Whether you're practicing yoga, stretching, mobility work, meditation, or simply sitting quietly with a journal, comfort matters.

Especially when you're hoping to make the practice part of your routine.

A Mat That Stays Put

One of the simplest but most important features is something many people never think about until it's missing.

A mat that stays where you put it.

The natural tree rubber base helps prevent sliding on the floor beneath you.

That stability allows you to focus on your practice rather than constantly repositioning your mat.

It's not flashy.

But it's something you notice every single time you practice.

Made Specifically for You

Every Big Raven Yoga mat is printed to order.

Paintbrush by Rachel Pohl

We don't pull products from a warehouse shelf.

When you place an order, your mat is created specifically for you.

That process allows us to offer a much wider range of artwork than traditional mass production.

It also means your mat hasn't been sitting in storage waiting for someone to buy it.

Whether you choose one of our artist-designed collections, personalize an existing design, or create something completely custom, the mat is produced for one person.

You.

The Specifications Matter Too

While the artwork often gets the attention first, the construction matters just as much.

Every Big Raven Yoga mat includes:

  • Recycled microfiber suede surface

  • 100% natural tree rubber base

  • 5mm thickness for comfort and support

  • Full-size dimensions of 6' x 2' (183 cm x 61 cm)

  • Grip that improves with moisture

  • Printed-to-order production

The combination of recycled microfiber suede and natural rubber was intentional. I wanted a mat that performed well, felt good to practice on, and aligned with my belief that products should be made thoughtfully whenever possible.

We designed the mat to be something that performs well and looks beautiful.

Not one or the other.

Both.

Creating a Space You'll Actually Use

One thing I've learned over the years is that consistency rarely comes from motivation alone.

It comes from creating an environment that supports the habits you want.

A mat you love seeing.

A space that feels inviting.

A few minutes that belong only to you.

Those things matter.

In fact, if building a more consistent yoga practice is one of your goals, you might also enjoy reading our blog, How to Stay Consistent With Yoga: Your Environment Matters More Than Discipline. In that article, I share some of the small habits that make it easier to keep showing up, even when life gets busy. Because consistency isn't usually about willpower. It's about removing obstacles and creating an environment that makes practice feel inviting.

The Quiet Difference

At the end of the day, the quiet difference isn't really about grip.

Or thickness.

Or customization.

Or artwork.

It's how those things come together.

It's the feeling of rolling out a mat that reflects who you are.

It's practicing on something that was created specifically for you.

It's having a mat that supports your movement without requiring extra layers, extra accessories, or extra compromises.

And maybe most importantly, it's having a mat that makes you want to come back tomorrow.

Because the mat you reach for again and again is usually the one that helps you build a lasting practice.

I also appreciate knowing that the mat beneath me combines recycled microfiber suede with a natural rubber base. Sustainability wasn't the only goal when I created Big Raven Yoga mats, but it was part of the equation. If I'm going to use something every day, I want it to be something that not only works well but is made with care.
