Feeling Stuck? Try These Three Simple Creative Exercises
Do you ever get the urge to create something but aren’t sure what? You want to be creative, work with your hands, but can’t decide between a big, intricate project or something quick and simple. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—I experience this too!
Over time, I’ve discovered a few creative exercises that help me shift from feeling stuck to feeling inspired. These easy activities let me explore my creativity without overcomplicating things. If you need a creative boost, try these ideas, and share your own tips in the comments!
1. Blackout Poetry
One of my favorite ways to spark creativity is through blackout poetry. Here’s how I do it:
-
I start with discarded book pages from other projects.
-
Using a pencil, I circle words or phrases that stand out or hint at a story.
-
I refine my selection to create a meaningful passage.
-
Then, I use a black Sharpie to obscure the rest of the text.
I love how unexpected stories emerge, and I often add these pieces to my visual or art journals.
2. Three-Part Collage
When I need a quick but satisfying creative project, I turn to my three-part collage process:
-
Background: I use leftover background papers from past projects and sew them together into a signature.
-
Focal Point: I choose a striking image or element from my favorite collage materials (Collage Soup is my go-to!).
-
Sentiment: I find a phrase, word, or quote that ties everything together.
This structured yet flexible process prevents overthinking and always leaves me feeling creatively refreshed.
3. Create Something for Someone Else
When I need a creative reset, I enjoy making gifts for others—like jelly rolls or belly bands. The process is simple and rewarding:
-
I use packing tape with a water-activated adhesive.
-
With a paintbrush and a cup of water, I layer scraps from my scrap bag onto the tape.
-
After covering the entire strip, I add a focal point or multiple elements.
-
Since the adhesive is now covered, I use Mod Podge or homemade glue to secure everything.
-
Once dry, I run it through my sewing machine with random stitching patterns to create a fragmented, textured effect.
-
Finally, I wrap the finished piece around a book, securing it with yarn, twine, or a bow—ready to gift!
