Imagine a Weekend Away, Immersed in Art…
The past year has taken an extraordinary toll on our lives in a multitude of ways. As we slowly begin to un-pause our lives and return to “normal,” undiscovered apprehensions and senses of loss begin to appear. One of the areas most likely to be impacted is our creative self. In this weekend-long retreat, we will turn to our idyllic setting to nurture our artistic sides and kickstart our creative processes. By incorporating an optional gentle yoga practice into our daily schedule, we will create a quiet and calming environment so our thoughts can be mindful and open to artistic inspiration.
All Experience Levels are Welcome and Celebrated...
Have you pushed the pause button on your creative spirit? Do you sometimes feel like you don’t know where to start? Is the blank page overwhelming or intimidating-are you afraid to make a “mistake.” This weekend retreat is for any artist who desires to awaken their freedom to create. There are no rules. There are no mistakes. In this workshop you will be given permission to play—through the process of play you will learn how to silence your internal critic who demands your perfection. Through practice of play—your art will grow.
During the retreat will have the opportunity to experiment with making your own stamps, mark-making, art journaling, incorporating watercolor and acrylic paint, collage, pulling inspiration from nature and what’s around you, working with layers, creating elements, handwriting, and where to take your art after you’ve played.

Arrival & Evening Programming
Pizza farm! Big Raven Farm will provide a welcoming farm-to-table buffet starting at 7 PM, and afterwards we’ll move to the studio for expressive play with our supplies: Paint scraping, using our fingers, watercolor washes, mark-making techniques, handwriting techniques, blind contour drawings, and making your own collage papers.
Friday : July 30
We’ll start the day with an easy hike around Big Raven Farm’s 2.2-mile walking trail as we look to nature for inspiration in our art. Notice (and jot down!) color inspirations. Note shapes to use for mark-marking and stamping. Collect items along the trail to use as tools. Sketch natural objects. Collect tactile notes, smells, and sounds.
Optional: Early Morning Gentle Yoga
In the afternoon, we’ll be making our own stamps based on our notes from the morning’s walk around the farm. We’ll use our stamps to create patterns, collage paper, and accents on journal pages.
Open Studio / Free Time
Saturday : July 31
We’ll apply the Japanese art of kintsugi to paper by harnessing the power of paper scraps to create a calming color collage. We’ll repurpose vintage papers and books pages and junk mail and other ephemera and combine them glue sticks, mod podge and gel medium to form a personal collage of mantras and inspiring words.
We’ll take what we’ve learned and created so far this weekend to begin assembling a journal spread. We’ll find starting points and choose themes for our journals, learn about the use of white space, and add journaling and private words to our pages. We’ll also learn how to add paper pockets to our journal pages.
Open Studio / Free Time.
Optional candlelight yoga before bed.
Sunday : August 1
Morning & Afternoon (Optional)
We’ll use the lessons from this weekend to create affirmation/wish cards to hand out to each person in the group.
