Well hey there, Craftonians! ✨
This week’s episode of Happy Time Craftcast is a little different—and if you've been curious about cyanotype printing, you're in for a treat. 💙
For a while now, I've been promising a demonstration episode, and this week we're finally diving into one of my favorite creative obsessions: cyanotypes.
If you've ever seen those beautiful blue botanical prints and thought, “That looks way too complicated,” I want you to know something right away—it really isn't.
The vibe? Curious. Experimental. Encouraging. ✨
What Is a Cyanotype Anyway?
Cyanotype printing is one of those magical art forms that combines science, creativity, and a little bit of surprise.
Using a light-sensitive emulsion, you can create stunning blue-and-white prints on paper or fabric using leaves, flowers, photographs, transparencies, and all sorts of interesting materials.
What I love most about cyanotypes is that every print feels like a discovery.
Some turn out exactly as planned.
Some don't.
And honestly? That's part of the fun. 💖
Getting Started Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
In this episode, I walk through the supplies I use, how I mix my chemistry, and the simple setup I use to create prints indoors.
One of the biggest misconceptions about cyanotypes is that you need perfect weather or ideal outdoor conditions. While sunshine certainly helps, there are ways to create beautiful prints without waiting for the perfect day.
And once you get started, the possibilities are endless.
Fabric. Paper. Tote bags. Botanical specimens. Vintage images.
The rabbit hole goes deep, my friends. ✨
Why I Love Teaching This Process
One of the reasons I host cyanotype retreats at Big Raven Farm is because I love watching people realize how approachable this medium really is.
At first, it can seem intimidating.
But after a few prints, that fear starts to disappear and curiosity takes over.
That's when the magic happens.
That's when people start experimenting.
That's when they begin creating things they never imagined they could make.
Why You'll Love This Episode
If you've ever wanted to:
✨ Try cyanotype printing
✨ Learn a new art technique
✨ Create botanical artwork
✨ Explore mixed media projects
✨ Experiment with fabric and paper printing
This episode is for you.
Because creativity doesn't require perfect conditions—it just requires a willingness to begin.
Until next time, Craftonians—keep experimenting, keep learning, and keep saying yes to new creative adventures. 💛
With love and laughter,
Joleen ✨
