The Joy of Watercolor with Margie Samuels - Joleen's Happy Time Craftcast 40

Hey, crafty friends!

I have to tell you—this episode of Happy Time Craftcast was extra special. You know those conversations that leave you feeling inspired, energized, and just so excited to grab your supplies and create? That’s exactly how I felt after chatting with the amazing Margie Samuels, an award-winning watercolor artist with a heart full of creativity and a lifetime of artistic wisdom.

And let me tell you—this woman KNOWS her watercolor!

A Little Glitch, A Lot of Fun!

So, full transparency: we had a few technical hiccups at the start. (Ahh, the joys of live streaming!) But, as always, the show must go on! While we worked through some guest connection issues, I took the opportunity to geek out over adhesives. (Because, honestly, who doesn’t love a good glue chat?) We talked glue sticks vs. Mod Podge vs. homemade “Brew”—and yes, I did go on a mini rant about how expensive Yes Paste is. (Seriously, WHY is it so pricey?!)

But the real magic happened when Margie finally joined us. And oh, was it worth the wait!

Meet Margie Samuels – Watercolor Extraordinaire!

Margie is a true artist in every sense. She’s a member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Essex Watercolor Club, has won multiple awards, and has spent years teaching and inspiring others through her work. But what I really loved about our conversation was how she made watercolor feel accessible and joyful.

If you’ve ever thought, I could never do watercolor—it’s too hard!, Margie is here to change your mind. She believes anyone can learn, and honestly, after talking to her, I believe it too!

What I Learned from Margie (and What YOU Can Too!)

Watercolor is a Dance

Margie described watercolor painting as a dance between you and the paint. Sometimes you lead, sometimes the paint takes over, and the trick is to just go with it. (Which, honestly, sounds like solid life advice, too.)

Happy Accidents are the Best Accidents

One of the reasons Margie loves watercolor is because of its unpredictability. “The beauty of watercolor is in its happy accidents,” she said. That unexpected splash? That unexpected blend of colors? Those are the moments that make a painting special.

Perfection is Overrated

Margie reminded us that art isn’t about perfection—it’s about expression. If you’ve ever stared at a blank page, afraid to make the first brushstroke because you might “mess it up,” Margie’s advice is simple: just start! Watercolor is forgiving, and every stroke is a learning experience.

Quality Supplies Matter… But Curiosity Matters More

Sure, having good paper and paint can help, but according to Margie, the most important thing you can bring to your art isn’t expensive supplies—it’s curiosity. Experiment. Play. Try different techniques. See what happens!

Why You’ll Love This Episode

This conversation was so full of creative energy—I know you’ll leave feeling inspired to try watercolor (or at least appreciate it in a whole new way!). Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned painter, Margie’s wisdom and encouragement will give you that little nudge to just go for it.

And if watercolor isn’t your thing? No worries! The lessons in this episode—embracing mistakes, letting go of perfection, and creating just for the joy of it—apply to any creative endeavor. Whether you’re into bookfolding, mixed media, or even just adult coloring books, this episode is for you!

And as always, let me know in the comments: Have you ever tried watercolor? Do you have a favorite glue for crafting? (Because I am still on my quest to find the ultimate adhesive!)

Until next time—stay creative, stay curious, and keep making beautiful things!

XOXO

Joleen
