Harvey Milk was the very first openly gay politician to be elected into office in California. He was responsible for passing a strong gay rights ordinance in the city of San Francisco and became an icon not only in California, but throughout the entire gay community. Unfortunately, Harvey Milk’s life was cut short. But, his memory lives on today, in 2009 he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
