History

The Harvest Moon can occur anytime between September and October, and is marked by the full moon which takes place closest to the September equinox. Of the many full moons throughout the year, the Harvest Moon is considered to be the most well-known. It’s debated as to exactly where the name “Harvest Moon” originated, but September has been labeled the “Harvest Month” as early as 700 AD! Considering how much has happened throughout history, it’s pretty amazing the name is still used today. Thanks to the famous (if we can call it that) Old Farmer’s Almanac, first published in 1792, we have a list of all the modern full moon names, derived from a combination of indigenous, Anglo-Saxon, and Germanic month names. Who knew the Harvest Moon had so much history behind it?

What does it mean for your Zodiac sign?

For those of you who aren’t big history buffs, the Harvest moon (in Aries) can also mean big things for your Zodiac sign. How the Harvest moon will affect you is mostly based on your ability to relax. The full moon is asking your sign to pause, take a deep breath, and be present — something we could all use a little more of…am I right, yogis? If you’re like an Aries, and always on the go, whether it be school, work, or errands, prepare yourselves because it’s gonna to be a tough month. While you may be ready to act on your first impulses, all signs says take a step back and look at the bigger picture first. Maybe think about heading to the studio for a bit with a brand-new yoga mat to clear the mind and re-center the body!

In China and Vietnam, the Harvest Moon marks Mid-Autumn Day, which is one of the most important festival of the year! And all over the Southern Hemisphere this rich Harvest Moon actually marks the seasons becoming warmer! It’s so easy to forget that the seasons are flipped (at least for those of us here in the good old U.S. of A.)!
