Everyone who knows just enough about yoga to be dangerous assumes that we’re all young tall slender white limber vegan Buddhists. And no wonder — that seems to be what’s on the cover of every single yoga magazine, ad and website.
But as we all know, the truth is much more complex. I’m white, sort of, but I’m not exactly THE paragon of young, tall, slender, limber or vegan (though I was for a while). Nor am I Buddhist, though I find a lot to admire about the Buddha himself, and Buddhism in general.
I respect the tenets of Buddhism, and I subscribe to its mindset, that craving and clinging to impermanent states of being (youth, for example) and material things (our houses, our cars, our clothes) is destructive and painful and detrimental to our real happiness. I can also get behind the 8-fold path (right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration). I can also get behind many of the Buddha’s observations, such as “Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except yourself.”
As we say our Buddha design description:
“You cannot rely on others; only yourself. Happiness comes from within. Confidence comes from within. Strength comes from within. No one will build your muscles for you. No one will make you more flexible. No one will force you onto your mat. You must do these things yourself.”
This week, we’re celebrating our Buddha yoga mat, which is one of our 5 new September designs. It serves as a reminder that the only thing you can truly count on is yourself. (AND our yoga mats, which are vibrant, durable, and completely machine-washable!)
We can’t force you onto your yoga mat, but we can give you a mat that you’ll look forward to unrolling, one that makes it easy to get up and get to class. We can’t force you onto a yoga mat, but we can certainly try to lure you onto one!
To make that lure even more enticing, take $10 OFF this week only using the promo code SANCTUARY at checkout!
(And also keep in mind that September is quickly drawing to a close, and therefore our September collection will be replaced by our October collection one week from today. If you’ve had your eye on one of our September designs, you should probably place your order while there’s still time…)
